>prime numbers can only be divisible by itself and 1
Yeah mathematics teachers around the world, that's not going to cause any confusion
>>29362669
How is that statement confusing at all? Are you fucking retarded?
>>29362669
Exactly. Only a retard would find that confusing
>>29362683
1 can only be divisible by itself and 1, but it's not a prime
>>29362700
It's defined by number theory, which holds as much ground as social constructs.
>>29362669
>can be divisible
That's redundant. '-able' refers to capacity already.
>>29362700
It is one so it's only divisible by one. A prime is divisible by 2 numbers
>>29363842
Uh. 1 is divisible by 0.999... Dude
>tfw you can convert any unit of measurement to another so that the resulting number is prime
>>29364286
What the fuck are you on? Prime numbers are dimensionless. They don't have any units.
>>29364241
>where the outcome is an integer
Stop trying to outsmart the people who made the rules for prime numbers, you really can't
That's why you say "prime numbers only have two factors"
>>29363842
3.7 is divisible by one and itself, but it isn't a prime number.
>>29365537
it's also not a whole number idiot
>>29362781
more imo
You know math teachers don't make up the rules right?
Iliterally do not know what kind of magik is happening in this thread
So, uh what's the application for prime numbers irl?
>>29365654
Passwords/cryptography.
>>29362669
Not confusing at all, except the 1 and 2. You're inclined to think 2 isn't a prime because it's an even number, but it's a prime. 1 is a prime too per definition.
>>29362700
That's just how it's defined. Like how you can't divide by 0. If you want more intuitive definition, it's "a prime number p is a natural number that is divisible by exactly 2 numbers: 1 and p itself"
1 wouldn't have 2 numbers.
>>29364286
Not really.
0 meters is equal to 0 miles, 0 feet, etc etc. 0 isn't a prime number. Arguably though, 0 isn't a natural number either, but that depends on who you ask.
>>29365537
Not a natural number
>>29365654
Prime numbers are used in mathematics later on. Also, it's just good to know that something is a prime number so you won't try to divide it. Like let's say you have a 29 people in a class, and you're supposed to divide them into teams somehow, then you know right away it won't be possible because 29 is a prime
So you know you'll have uneven team numbers (like 10, 10 and 9)
>>29364241
0.999... is 1
>>29365654
You see them crop up all the time in practical design work for a multitude of reasons. Gear ratios, etc.
>>29365777
>but that depends on who you ask
Who with any knowledge of mathematics would say that 0 is a natural number
>>29362669
Its very simple. Every number, n, has at least two divisors, namely 1 and n. If thats it, its prime. If not, its not.
>>29365883
>at least
You mean "only"? 9 is divisible by 3 and is not a prime number (hence 9 is a composite number).
>>29365825
Any professor of theoretical computer science.
>>29365825
everyone you faggot. otherwise it isn't a ring
>>29365976
No I think he means every number has at least two divisors, and if those are the only two then that's what makes it prime
>>29365654
Bitcoins
originale
>>29366302
It's still not a ring, moron.
The real answer is that there's a different definition of prime that is a little better. That definition explicitly excludes units, which are numbers that you can multiply by something else and get 1. Since 1 is a unit, it isn't prime.
