If there's one thing that goes vastly underrated in many people's lives, it's the ability to have taste refined to a specific enough point where there is a clear line of what you should read/watch/listen to next, but you just don't have the time. Not really, they're more a physical manifestation of the soul. The mechanics of the daemons are a bit more complex than that and slowly explained/discovered in the books.
