with the Internet and music production being easier to access we get a lot more of everything . The voice has always been a thing. It isn't a trend that's trying to take over music. It's just an aesthetic some people go for because they feel like it goes with the type of music they want to make.
If you're not into the music scene then you're going to notice it . Florida doesn't constantly get attacked by tornadoes. California doesn't constantly get attacked by Earthquakes. Taylor Swift doesn't just sing about break ups. Mumford and Sons doesn't just sing about being heart broken. If you actively listen to music then it doesn't phase you since there's plenty of artists that have sort of characteristic to their voice.

I'm not quite understanding what you're saying. Are you telling me that the artists who use that voice aren't top 40? Because they always are. The artists whose voice they are deriving their own from aren't but, the "indie" girls themselves are.
That type of vocal timbre may have been around for a while, but like I said, it's just a trend that's popular right now.
Anyways, I do happen to listen to a lot of music and of the female artists that I do listen to (Vashti Bunyan, Linda Perhacs, Sibylle Baier, Ann Steel), none really have that voice.
One has too admit that it's easily a lot more prevalent in top 40 than it's been in the past.
