I'd imagine if a casual acquaintance sincerely responds to "How you doin/how are you/etc" with a long winded reply about their troubles, something might be a little not right about them. But I feel you though, luckily the scenario has never occurred to me, I'd probably give them fake comfort as best I can, without getting too invested in it, they might think I actually give a shit and I don't know, cling on to me/keep talking to me about it.
I mean I'd like for them to be doing well, I might even be able to commiserate with them mentally, but I don't know them much less love them, so I'm not going to go to extreme lengths to help them.
