Like with so many things, being a loner is OK... if you're attractive otherwise. When you're attractive, being a loner is edgy, dangerous, you seem independent, untamed etc... but if you're unconfident, fat etc. people will assume you fucking suck.
It's the same with any other individual flaw. If you have few enough of them, people will find reasons to excuse the flaw. But if you set off their "LOSER" alarm, that trait that is just lovable in someone else is fatal in you.
