Japanese uses a combination of hiragana, katakana, romaji, and kanji, with only kanji being ideographic
the Chinese system of language isn't necessarily worse or less descriptive, but what you are saying is true, there's one huge obvious flaw - there is an infinite amount of ideas that humans can create, so there would be an infinite amount of characters, right? They get around this by characters more representing groups of ideas rather than specific ideas, so two or more can be chained together to create more complex ideas - hello in chinese is ni hao, or "you good".
chinese or Japanese can get by knowing around 2000 characters or kanji, and chinese kids don't learn language any slower than kids in the US or UK, so it works out after all
