Why does the US maintain a military presence in Japan after all these years?
Is it just to keep North Korea from invading or something?
The US maintains military bases in many countries all over the world in order to have a fast response time to locations all over the world, the base in Japan houses multiple aircraft carriers I believe which could be deployed quickly anywhere in east asia
The military bases the United States operates are for more than just protection but for projection of power, North Korea and China know they will be fucked if they attack anything because the US has a giant military presence in Japan and Korea.
It's a beneficial agreement for Japan because American military bases frequently boost the local economy and they get free protection if it's in the US interests
That being said, many Japanese Okinawans don't like the military bases, shinzato is the last of a long line of crimes and rowdy behavior by the sailors on the base, and some right wing Japanese feel Japan would be better off if they grew their own military instead of relying on the US.

Some Okinawans do not think of themselves as Japanese and would like more autonomy from the Japanese government, not just America. The United States are also planning to withdraw completely from Okinawa at some unspecified date (it has not been announced but basing in Okinawa is too much of a hassle). The troops will be based in Australia instead, maybe in a few decades Vietnam as well.
It is also very expensive for the United States to house troops in foreign countries. The price for local food is usually much higher than if the troops were based in the United States.
