I have one, but I'm about to get a motorcycle. Its okay, but its just too underpowered. They're okay for stop and go city traffic but the lack of power really does limit your options. If you insist on getting one, make sure it's not Chinese, and make sure it's at least 150. Might as well save up and get a proper motorcycle, you can find okay condition gs500s and ninja 500s for under 1500 on Craigslist.

I have two, a 150 chinese thing with like 7k miles that still runs well, just put a new ignition into it, and another, shittier chinese PoS I bought from some guy for 25$ that didn't even start which I worked on, threw in a new carb, replaced all the tubes, got a new spark plug, did some general stuff, and got to run good as new

Not really, a moped is considered a pedal assist motorized 2 wheeled vehicle, a scooter has no pedals, as for the legal vehicular classification, it depends on your local laws although the 50cc thing where you don't need a license is quite common.
