Because there is a feedback loop of people not helping each other which creates bitterness for nobody helping anybody else which makes people even less likely to help anybody but their direct offspring.
This has created a quasi caste-system where wisdom and knowledge is inherited like financial capital over generations.
Since your parents didn't have the internet it was almost impossible for them to break out of this cycle compared to our generation.
