Certain beliefs can make people do certain things. Islam is most certainly a young religion so they haven't learned to give up the radical beliefs yet.
Almost all of the old religious teachings are incompatible with our modern world. They are violent, misogynistic, cruel and barbaric.
Why treat islam like its so special? It IS a violent religion, like most of the others.

This could just mean that the grip of religious conviction is strong among true believers regardless of how the doctrine is being taught and what is being emphasized.
But an apple is not an orange and the way Islam is taught today in parts of the world doesn't appear to be changing very quickly. There is no use in disentangling the doctrine of Islam from it's geopolitical background when the believers simply acknowledge it as the words of Allah and the prophets.
The muslims I've met have seemed pretty moderate (pretty chauvinist, though), but I didn't press them on the unsettling aspects of their faith.
All major religions are shit when you boil it down like Harris does, but most people now seem to need them. It's a shame.
