Its more about showing the people around us we enjoy the scene being projected. The clapping usually starts after the American flag is raised and we all stand for the national anthem. After that the movie starts and it is rated by the number of claps.
However, not everyone claps. If someone does not like the movie they will cross their arms and stick their tongue; though this is unpopular to do as they are heckled at and often the target of thrown popcorn.
The American Cinema experience is unlike that of any other country.
Why can't Americans just enjoy a cinematic experience without stuffing their faces with nachos? Why would you want to spread that stink around?
