"Disappointment" is defined to be the difference between expectation and reality, right?

We have to stop telling children that they have potential, or that they can be whatever they want to be. It just sits them up for a life of misery. Would you rather have a life agonizing over what you could have been, always striving for a slightly bigger house, or would you rather have a life of being grateful for what you have?

I say don't tell kids they can be millionaires and save the world. Tell them life is too hard, they'll never fucking do it, and think realistically. Don't tell girls they're equal to boys. Tell them to choose between being a whore and a loyal housewife.

BLM, the feminist movement, Occupy Wall Street, it's all because some idiots got some expectations in their heads of how things SHOULD be and then realized none of it was true. People are much happier if they know their place.

The best thing about it is that the truly great people, the Albert Einsteins and Henry Fords, can't help but be successful, no matter what mom and dad told them growing up.

Damn it, you guys. I'm serious about this shit.

I agree with you OP. It's meant to build self esteem but kids just take that shit too literally. No trophies for last place.

For me it's much closer to desire and reality.

Sounds sensible to me. Believing in dreams and wishful thinking just leads to heartache. I work with a lot of Indian people and it seems like they're raised differently. They know their lot is just to work, its like dude just skate through some basic education, get a shitty job, you're not going to love your job and that's okay because the point is just to make money to survive, not to "follow your passion" or anything. Don't do anything crazy with your life, you can't be whatever fantasy thing you think you can be, just work and enjoy some pirated Hollywood movies whenever your employer gives you a few hours off. You have to marry a woman and have kids with her because that's just what people do and you'll need someone to care for you when you're old, even if you fuck this up your parents will arrange a wife for you so that you stay on the track. It all just makes a lot of sense, even the caste system makes sense, just accept reality early on so you don't dash yourself upon the rocks.

Totally agreed on the "follow your passion" bullshit. I have a lot of Asian friends (raised in Asia, not here) who all have sensible majors. Engineering, accounting, business. One said "I really like art, but it's not realistic, so I only do it in my spare time. That's why I did engineering"

Here we have oceans of idiots in art and English and sociology because they have no regard for practicality
