You play AoE exactly how I did; I never worried about building an army, I just always played Byzantines and saw how many layers of walls I could build. Nice to know I'm not the only one that did this.
Something I did when I was struggling with social interaction in high school (though you could still do it at your age) was that I started wearing a suit whenever I would leave the house. I started out looking like a complete retard (didn't take care of my hygiene at all, wore a sportscoat that was way too big and ill-fitting pants) but slowly with time I started to groom myself to "fit the suit", so you could say. Gave me enormous confidence, landed me tons of jobs and connections before I got out of high school, and it fixed all of the shitty hygienic habits I had at the beginning of high school (can't even think of how bad my acne would be right now if I never did this).
The suit doesn't have to be expensive when you start, I got my first few from Goodwill for dimes on the dollar. I'm not an attractive guy by any stretch of the imagination, but when you're strolling around in a suit, people tend to look up to you regardless of your position in life. You'll appear more knowledgeable and amicable, and people will sometimes approach you and engage you in a casual conversation. It'll be awkward the first few times, but the more it happens the more you'll get used to it, and you may even make some friends from it, too.
That's what I did, anyways. Take it as you will.

In Australia, if you don't live with parents the government will pay you to study or just look for work.
You apply for 20 jobs a fortnight and the payments keep coming.
It's not much but it's liveable for me.
I have no qualifications so nobody even calls me for an interview.
Unemployment is only going to rise so I suspect universal basic income is less than 10 years away.
Keep in mind, I am actually trying hard to get a part-time job.
Being NEET sucks if you're depressed and have no friends.
