Anime used to be an escapism method as you said. I would get so immersed into whatever I was watching and it would take me away. But around the time I turned 23 I started noticing I was getting choked up by dramatic moments such as when a shounen boy powers up and rescues a cute girl. Or basically anything involving love interests. It got worse and tears started rolling out during those moments, and after it was over there was just an intense feeling of sadness for sometimes even days.
So I stopped watching anime. It's the same with normal t.v shows and even movies too. Can't watch them without crying when there's a lovey dovey moment.
