It's a pretty fun game.

Magic started going downhill with Mirrodin and hit bedrock with Ravnica imo. It briefly got revived with Innistrad, but now they're shitting on it with a spinoff expansion. And in the meantime, they released abominations such as Khans of Tarkir and Blizzard started aping their spiel for free. It's ovah I tell you! MTG peaked with the Weatherlight Saga and Urza blocks in 1997 - 99.
>>
>>29171300
You're probably right, never played it back then but i think there is still some charm to it. Hearthstone gets boring after 10 minutes but playing magic doesnt get that tiresome imo.
>>
MtG community is actually trash it's all

>check out my edh deck!
>mtg has trans characters!! So inclusive!
>don't misgender ashiok!

Game is fun, and draft is one of the most skill testing games I've ever played. The higher level you go the more chill people are, but fucking casuals are the worst.

1) It costs money that I would use on collecting Lego minifigures.
2) I'm not competitive at all when it comes to tactics or strategy or anything of that sort.
>>
>>29171189
I've been playing and collecting for over 10 years now, but it's pretty much become pointless since I have no friends to play it with. I'm pretty much stuck to MTGO and Forge.

There isn't a community in the shithole where I live. Would love to, though.

My dads friend gave me ~500 magic cards about 15 years ago now.
Can I still use them to play with modern cards or what, I've never played magic.
Would they be worth anything?

Card games are OK. I played some Magic with a friend a year ago. We bought the Orange box with dragons on and had alot of fun with it.

Until one night he couldn't sleep and sorted the perfect decks. For us both in fairness but I could never beat him again with either deck. We had a lot of fun anyway.

I prefer miniatures games and RPGs.

I just invested fairly heavily in X wing. I love it and might see if there's any adult competitions for it at my FLGS.

i only ever played with non-regulars**

I actually started playing this month and it's quite fun but if I wanted to be any good I'd need a way better deck. I collected them as a kid but I didn't understand shit so most of my collection is garbage. And the "budget" decks I see range into hundreds of dollars so I can't even imagine what the nonbudget ones cost. Being a poorfag sucks.
>>
>>29173545
>I've won plenty of tournaments (big and small) using sub-par cards, decks, and budgeted versions of pre-existing decks.
But that's just wrong.
Why on earth would you use a sub-par card(s)? Not to mention Wizards pushing multi-colored decks heavily in the past years. That means you have to pay $100 or more just for the fucking lands. The metagame is constantly shifting so GL getting through the season with just one deck. Also they can ban any card they want potentially rendering your deck(s) useless. This also makes all the other cards in affected decks drop in value so GL selling them.

Yeah, occasionally a decent "cheap" deck pops up like the Monoblue Prison lately, but overall MTG is a money-sink.
>>
i got into magic around 2001 in summer camp when I was nine. I stopped playing around 2004, when the card design changed, because I couldn't get over how shitty the new style was. i really did not like the new design, so i stopped buying the new cards.

i find the art style of the modern cards so lifeless and uninteresting. i thought the older cards often had more character and more variation.

i can't help but feel like this is just a little autistic...
>>
>>29174648
also, i remember going to the card shop and seeing all sorts of boosters from the 90s and early 2000s, including the urza's set. a friend got a rofellos that all of us who played green coveted...

But I was buying mostly Ice Age packs for some reason...

I spend an unhealthy amount of money on Magic.

I come across a new deck idea and decide that I want it and then I buy the deck no matter what it ends up costing me, consequences be damned. One of my EDH decks cost me $1200. I have multiple Modern decks that cost $800+ each.

All my cards do is gather fucking dust in a great big pile of boxes in my room, save for the rare occasion maybe 4 or 5 times per year when the only friends I've ever had come back home, the stars align with scheduling, and we manage to meet up and play magic on the kitchen table. Then I win all too easily because I've invested thousands of times more money than they have, and none of us end up having fun.
Such are the woes of not having a -Local- Gaming Store. Even if I did have a store I could easily get to, I probably wouldn't go there anyway because of crippling anxiety and also because the people who spend a lot of time in gaming stores (at least in my experience from when I used to play Warhammer) are sweaty, smelly, ugly mouthbreathing nerds who are just fucking unpleasant to be around. Kinda like myself.

Magic isn't a leisurely activity with a welcoming community, it's a crippling addiction which fucks my wallet more than all the fucking alcohol I keep struggling with.
It's literally cardboard crack.

Every card game has a couple cheese decks to counter expensive decks that are relatively cheap. You just have to either get lucky or play it smart.

In yugioh I was beating richfags using burning crusade with lightsworns. The look on their face when they see their money wasted was glorious.

Okay, I'm gonna give you this. When I say sub-par, I mean sub-par for the meta.
If you're good at the game, and good at meta analysis, you can build an anti-meta deck.
However, if you're a fucking autist, I can understand why this concept may be strange and frightening to you.

This shit made my eyes hurt, stop asking for special treatment because your a girl.

You know what I hear a lot of? "For a fit guy..." "For a normal looking guy like yourself..."
Because I don't look, or smell, like a fucking basement dweller.

Get over yourselves, grow up, and accept the fact that most of the people who play this game are fucking weirdo's.
>>
>>29177325
Have you considered that not everyone is okay with magic being filled with weirdos? Articles like those are trying to combat that weirdness

Also, you can't compare being fit or normal-looking to being a girl in card shop because a.)for most normal looking people its not something that would be brought up often and b.) girls have to deal with that shit all the time for liking other shit and it gets annoying

Asking to not be condescended to for being a girl isn's asking for special treatment. It's just asking to be treated like a normal fucking person

Okay, you lost me way fucking sooner than this, but I'd like to point out.
Most of these people, ARE LITERALLY FUCKING AUTISTIC. The reason I'm saying it's special treatment is because to them, it is. They can't handle seeing someone different then them.
I treat everyone I play against (Yes, everyone) respectfully to their face.
But jesus fuck. Get over yourself.
They're not normal enough to treat anyone with any normal level of respect.

It's expensive for neets. If anyone tries to say it isn't all chase cards are minimum 20 dollars and you most likely need 4 of it and that isn't including rare lands which are more expensive.

Force of will has been nice. Nothing more expensive than 5 bucks unless you want the highest rarity of your hero character which you can get the same common version of for 5 cents.

I bought some so I could socialise. Asked some people, played once. Too anxious to go back, There was a lot of autism and anime but I kept my power level to myself.

I have a card worth $100, if I can sell it I'll have made a profit from the whole ordeal and I wouldn't feel bad about sinking money into it and not playing much. This happens a lot (If I get into x hobby it'll be an opportunity to get out of the house and socialise)

Normal people play the game. They're scarce, but they're out there.

You won't find them at tourny's, though.
>>
>>29179445
>You won't find them at tourny's, though.
What you actually mean is
>You won't find them at any tourney smaller than a Grand Prix
Normies only play the big tourney's.
>>
>>29179278
The game itself was fun but holy shit you'd have to be autistic to play anything other than kitchen table stuff. One guy had 30 tokens on the field, the other had 50 health.

I guess it would have been better to start with friends instead. I got what I was looking for out of the game though, I wanted them sweet instants turning the whole game around. It was 5 people vs eachother, I came 2nd. I knew I wasn't going to win so I waited until the two people who knew what they were doing finally attacked eachother then played a card that gave all defending monsters +7/7, regardless if they were my own. Made one of them rage quit lol.
>>
I got into it in the 90s. I had some really good revised, unlimited, 4th edition cards. I looked at some cards that people use nowadays and it seems watered down. Assuming I still had cards no one wants to play with me anyway

there are no good online MtG communities, and you're lucky if you can make a few bros to play with irl, but most of the guys you will meet in shops are clique-ish casual players that already have an established playgroup and are hesitant to include you, and spiky grinder types that don't play any casual formats. Drafting is pretty fun and skill testing, and is about the only format I have any fun with.
>>
If you take a close look, you'll find that most Championship decks are very simple and linear. Strong creatures, removal, countermagic and burn spells are what grind down the opposition, it just depends on who draws the better opening hand.

Thing is, 80% of players can't afford to build the big league decks because the 20% flock and a big buyout is commenced on staples. Those buyouts can affect the supply and affordability for years.

As soon as a card gets banned from a format, most likely the price will nosedive to a half of the previous price when the competitive autists sellout. Then the normies pick up on this and a secondary buyout is commenced weeks later, thus keeping the price up in the long run.

Also, reprinting good cards does not necessarily mean the price will substantially drop for those cards. Maybe $10, but if the reprint is still above $40 then the point is redundant.

In short, Magic is a hell of a drug.
