He essentially put his whole massacre on a pretty tight timer. He had already murdered his roommates, uploaded the retribution video, and emailed his manifesto. His parents called the cops on him and were on their way to Isla Vista. So when he failed to get into the sorority with no backup plan for a different sorority/target he panicked and just started driving around looking for random kills. The whole thing was pretty pathetic, Elliot tries to portray himself as this evil, highly intelligent, meticulous and calculating supervillain in his manifesto but in reality he was lazy and put forth barely any planning into the killings.

It's also interesting how the shooting spree that started the school shooting trend was really just a failed bombing. If their bombs had gone off the spree shooting part would have just been a sidenote. But it also makes me wonder whether they would have spawned so many imitators or become such icons of evil. Bombs may have produced a higher body count but they don't have the sort of romanticism of gunmen picking off defenseless victims in cold blood. Might have been better for society in the long run if they had just built their bombs properly.
