It's rather soul crushing sometimes, though. There's a group of people I've been friends with on an irc channel for about 6 years now. We chat daily, and we're on a first name basis. I use a fake one, of course. I've even seen a few of their pictures, and it hurts that I can't share.
I just feel more comfortable as a girl, and online is the only place I can do it because I'm basically a bear of a man.
