dear diaryI have mixed feelings about this. I am a coward. I never talk to anyone. I've never been on a date, never tried. I've let all of my circumstantial friendships from school days dwindle and die.
Part of me wants to eliminate all behaviors associated with shame. My current behavior clearly does not attract friends, so why should I care what people think? Logically there's no reason to be apprehensive about judgement, since they're not my friends anyways, and I'm not going to magically become socially skilled. I ought to be honest, uninhibited, and have no fear of looking like a fool. And I'm well aware of the spotlight effect, which makes the fear of looking like a fool doubly foolish. People probably won't even notice or remember any "embarrassing" behavior I currently avoid and suppress, and even if they do notice, there was never a chance they'd respect me anyways.
But hope springs eternal, etc etc. Part of me wants to say that's just sour grapes rationalization, and that I'm a pussy for never having tried to make friends, that I could make friends if I really tried and just got through the awkwardness, hard work, and difficulty of re-learning.
