"south asian" is the name for the race, because the population of said race happens to be concentrated in the south of asia.

whereas in britain, people generally share a culture, language and appearance whether they live in the north and south - in asia that quite clearly isn't the case - therefore it's appropriate to group people into different "races".
some of these "races" happen to be named after where they are situated, which sort of makes sense.
similar to how "indian" people are named after india, the place where they are found - south asians are named after south asia, they place where they are from.
