Does not help a failing body no. It gives you a bit of the kick you need to start and stay on your tasks or whatever you want to set you focus on. it improves concentration and the ability to not feel mental fatigue.

all of that self discipline got me nowhere.
Sleeping on a firm surface is actually much healthier for your back and is much more refreshing. I've been sleeping on a floor with only two thin blankets separating me for about two and a half months. I wake up feeling much more refreshed. Sure, the first few days make you ache a bit, but that's just your body not being used to it.

Well when I said "a couple years" I was lying.
I actually started when I was 13 by doing push ups, sit ups, squats and occasionally running. I did this on and off for a few years.
At 16 I did this every other day, each time going to failure. I've been doing this consistently for the past 3 years I think.
Make sure to add weight in after a while, also try to do more than just push ups and sit ups. Try to do some variations.
