I think the whole subcultural affiliation thing among whites is a sort of sublimated racial identity thing.
Remember that while all of you non-whites are encouraged to take pride in your racial background as a matter of course, whites are encouraged to do the complete opposite. Human beings have a natural desire for group identity (whether they want to admit it or not), and the most natural form of group identity is identifying with your kin. Denying someone this basically makes them crazy and forces them to find other outlets for group identity.
At best it's just some mild affiliation with nerds or people who share your own musical interests (which in the form of things like metal may as well be a form of white identity in all but name), at worst it's furry shit.
