I've always been a excellent salesman, so I applied for and got a job with a marketing company which had the contract for a long distance carrier in the area. I looked at their payout structure and noticed it was a geometric scale based on the number of contracts you could close. It was shit pay unless you could get a large number of deals closed. I decided I'd give it a shot by spending the first week working non-stop, 14 hours a day, every day, to see what the maximum possible number of contracts I could expect to get.
Until that time, the most number of contracts anyone had gotten was 11. I ended up closing 136 and, according to their payment structure, should have earned about $20,000.
Instead, they screwed me over. They accepted 20 contracts and told me I could submit the rest 20 at a time each week.
Their office manager knocked on my door that night and told me that I had essentially broken the bank, and that if they'd paid me, they'd have gone bankrupt. He also said if they were willing to screw me over, they'd screw him over too -- and that he could see I was a fuckload better at sales than they were and wanted to hitch his wagon to me.
With his help we put together a pitch and approached the guy who held the contract for our region, promised him X number of contracts per week or we don't get paid for *any*, and snatched the contract right out from under his old company, putting them out of business.
We showed up at their offices to collect our final paycheques and gloat. They were packing everything up and begged us to wait on collecting our paycheques because they were having to pay it out of their personal credit cards. I actually laughed and told them to give me the fucking money. The wife of the owner was crying.
