Literal billionaire Elon Musk, the guy with an engineering degree who started a PhD program but left because he was making too much money, the guy who built PayPal and now works on electronic cars (Tesla) and literal rocket science (SpaceX), the guy who shitposts about Kerbal Space Program on Reddit, thinks we're all living inside a video game.

You hear that? It's not your fault. You were programmed with set parameters. You didn't do anything to deserve this, but you cannot break out of it either.

That study doesn't say that. It just says wealth correlates with immorality. It doesn't say wealth causes immorality. Perhaps immorality causes wealth?

Yes, let's consult the engineer/business man on matters of cosmology...

Interesting concept. It's actually comforting to think that none of our actions really matter.

We're still finding shit inside our own solar system. We're still finding new species of life at the bottom of Earth's oceans and in random jungles.

To think anyone speaks with authority on the universe, or even our galaxy, is hilarious. Everyone's got their own ideas, and Musk's is one of them.

Everyone else: " WOWOW xD! Haha totes crazy man how true! Wow dude are you a genius or something??? Who would of thought huh????"
>>
>>29027080

First of all, the simulation theory pre-dates Musk by a long shot.

Secondly, it's not about speaking with authority. It's about speaking with the perspective that comes from expertly studying the data and drawing conclusions based on that.

A cosmologist would do that. Musk probably hasn't given it that much thought beyond reading the types of books any of us do.
>>
>>29027220
Nice try, but Elon Musk has a higher IQ than most scientists and actually made his money in the private sector (PayPal) without relying on government cheese.

Engineers are more useful than scientists anyways.

literally retarded.

you can't simulation one atom accurately using less than one atom, to accurately simulate a universe you'd need to dedicate at least a universe to the task

>b-but muh quantum machines are le simulation taking le shortcuts!
Quantum mechanics are the exact OPPOSITE of what you'd see inside a simulate, you'd expect shit to Just Work in a simulation, because it doesn't actually need to work, on a physical level, inside the simulation.
>>
>>29027220
I can't believe you don't know this. Jeff Gerstmann of Giant Bomb nailed this years ago, when has was talking about personality-based (instead of content-based) journalism. I'm not into video games anymore, but I still think that insight is relevant and applicable.

>This is the reality of the current industry we are in and it s something that Jeff Gerstmann predicted back in the day when he talked about the byline and the fact that the person writing the review was just as, if not more important, than the actual text of the review itself

Humans trying to understand the universe are like ants trying to understand calculus. But then again, ants don't need to understand calculus to build functioning hives.

There is so much shit that we are probably not aware of, and I don't mean that in a spiritual or religious sense.

It's possible our brains literally cannot comprehend important parts of how everything works.

For example, look at this animal, the Mantis Shrimp. It is a shrimp. People in asia literally cook it into stews when they find it. It beats the shit out clams and crabs with mineral deposit lever action boxing gloves. Surprisingly, it has one of the most developed visual systems of literally any living thing (fish, birds, mammals) and can sense colors we can't understand - each individual eye of the mantis shrimp sees in 3D

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U11DgbefmQQ

>The midband region of its eye is made up of six rows of specialised ommatidia - a cluster of photoreceptor cells. Four rows carry up to 16 different photoreceptor pigments, 12 for colour sensitivity, others for colour filtering. The vision of the mantis shrimp can perceive both polarised light and multispectral images.[13] Their eyes (mounted on mobile stalks and capable of moving independently of each other) are similarly variably coloured and are considered to be the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom.

musk is taking advantage climate change legislation to build his 'electric' cars
What people don't know is electric cars use batteries that are more harmful to the environment in their creation than gas vehicles are.
And the environmental movement is shitting on fracking as well when its basically no pollution and the evidence that its dangerous is slim, of course you can still frick your frack and fuck everything up but even if you do its not as bad as the million oil spills that shit all over wildlife.
Its the same as the green energy meme. You can go check to see how germany is doing with that piece of shit.
Climate change legislation turns people into total retards as far as policy goes. A lot of people don't even know that ethanol(corn gas) which they forced into every gas station wrecks your engine and doesn't help emissions a fucking lick.
Of course, no one is interested in repealing that shit. When I bring these facts up to people they just tell me I'm wrong or that can't be right, they don't care about the truth they just want to feel like they saved the whales or some shit.
Meanwhile, climate change is unimpeded and the U.N. agencies have been waving the white flag saying 'well now we gotta just minimize the damage' of all the shit that didn't cause any problems in the fucking first place.
When I listen to this shit on NPR it makes my blood boil. And they treat musk like he's some great hero for making electric cars. Sure, if he makes it viable it will be worth it, but I don't see that happening. Its just a way for liberals to feel okay about hating oil companies as they drive their shitty hybrid ford focus and feel superior to other people for no substantive reason.
>>
>>29029002
some smart people think it might be a thing so they are spending time making up bullshit that makes it sound like its possible
theres zero 'evidence'
>>
>>29028575
That shrimp is an example of being able to perceive what we can only imagine, not something we can't understand.

Besides, scientists of years past have made discoveries based on intuitive leaps they couldn't explain. Einstein couldn't really explain in detail how he came up with the idea of why time and space were the same thing, he just kind of knew it based on some abstract idea he had when looking at a clock tower, and went on to prove it. Obviously he needed the intellectual chops to do that, but in no way was his discovery based on rational linear thought.

I think people can understand things even without knowing why they understand them. The same way the best boxing coach in the world could be a shitty boxer, and the boxer himself while not being as technically versed, is a champion regardless.
>>
>>29029068

What does that have to do with Elon Musk talking shite about things he has no expertise in (i.e., cosmology)?

>you can't simulation one atom accurately using less than one atom

Why does the "outside" universe need to have atoms? The building block of that universe could be completely different but they use our simple atoms inside their system. Like we use digital information of either on/off in our computers, whereas our actual universe has many analog states. The real universe could be infinitely more complex than ours, and our simple universe could be simulated.
>>
>>29029115

>I think people can understand things even without knowing why they understand them.

Scientism, everybody.
>>
>>29027529
By that logic to simulate a building you need a building, or to simulate a city you need a city. The key word is simulation. A simulation is not the actual thing.
>>
>>29029002
None, it's just another one of those stupid ideas that only seem plausible because its totally impossible to comprehend how it works. Its so far out of our grasp that we would need to have a complete grasp on how every aspect of the laws of physics of our universe work before we can even take a swing at something like this.
>>
>>29027529
You assume too much.
Say some far advanced species develops computers totally alien in design to what we have, say we make it to the point where the only mysteries left are things we weren't around to observe. We would naturally focus on recreating the formation of the universe and studying the formation of planets, space itself, life and all that.

You assume we aren't living in a stripped-down reality as compared to the one we'd be computed in. As if our universe is as complex as anything can be.

If it IS possible, it's more than likely the case. It's entirely possible, try disproving god. Hell, that'd be exactly what that is. God's an alien programmer and he has an eye for detail.
>>
>>29029368
>it's more than likely the case

How do you know that? Because Elon Musk told you?
>>
>>29026567

>advanced civilization

Once again, Musk proves he's a lucky retard. A single company under Toady One's leadership could recreate our world on a scale of 1 to virtual 1.
>>
>>29029331
No, that's not what he's saying.

You can run a simulation of a city on a computer because it's not actually as complex as a real city. So in reality you can only superficially run a simulation of a city on a computer.

What he's saying, is to run an exact simulation of a universe, you'd need something equally complex and powerful to do so, which is true. That is, unless our universe is not actually as complex as the true universe. In the same way Sim City isn't as complex as New York.
>>
>>29029368
Exactly,

To relate that to my analogy of cities, you can run a simulation of a city and strip the simulation of the useless elements, you don't need to render every crack in the sidewalk, junkie on the street, and every nook and cranny, you strip out useless elements and thus reduce complexity of the simulation, it's still a simulated city for all intents and purposes.

"Elon Musk ... explained that he's had so many discussions about simulation with his brother that they decided to 'ban such conversations if we're ever in a hot tub - because that really kills the magic.'"
so he has romantic, "magical" encounters with his brother in hot tubs. gay. brother-fuckingly gay.

What if dreams are our visions of one or more parallel universe version(s) of ourselves, because when we sleep our brain can tap into it somehow?

I believe the same thing, well almost the same thing. I'm not sure if video game is most likely, but certainly simulation of some kind.

Here kids, on climate and weather:

Weather is the day-to-day state of the atmosphere, and its short-term variation in minutes to weeks. People generally think of weather as the combination of temperature, humidity, precipitation, cloudiness, visibility, and wind. We talk about changes in weather in terms of the near future: "How hot is it right now?" "What will it be like today?" and "Will we get a snowstorm this week?"

Climate is the weather of a place averaged over a period of time, often 30 years. Climate information includes the statistical weather information that tells us about the normal weather, as well as the range of weather extremes for a location.

So yeah, Upstate New York and the climate seems like it has changed noticeably since I was a wee lad. The winters come later and are less intense.

But that doesn't mean 'global warming'. Actual climate change can cause the sea levels to rise without the planet having to be any warmer. Just think of the climate of an area being based on historic patters of the movement of hot and cold air, that is all that climate is, simply put.

>>
>>29041347

>>
>>29026855
It's not about charisma as much as risk taking. The guy put most of his net worth into Tesla when it was failing to keep it going. If Tesla had failed he would have lost most of his money. However, it succeeded and he made millions. Michael Jordan isn't that charismatic but people like him because he took chances and was a winner with a killer instinct when if the met him in person they could easily think he's the biggest asshole.
>>
>>29041393
Im asking for the sources youre basing your conclusions on

Are you retarded?
>>
>>29041417
He also took a huge risk personally funding some of the early development at SpaceX. People forget but SpaceX almost went bankrupt in 2008.

The guy definitely has some balls.
>>
>>29026613
well yeah, because the poor face higher consequences. that says nothing about desire, character, etc

>>
>>29041559

>>
>>29041489
That's really the only way you can make huge amounts of money as quickly as he has. In order to win you have to be willing to lose.
>>
>>29041417

michael jordan is extremely charismatic. not sure what you're talking about. he had great presence to go with his talent. charisma has nothing to do with being an asshole. a lot of extremely charismatic people are awful human beings.
>>
>>29041584
Why haven't you figured out yet that I'm not the guy you originally responded to? You really need to get to your local library so you can check out a book about not being a re-re.
>>
>>29041604
Indeed. I wouldn't have the stomach for it. I absolutely love my work and live a very frugal life but if you gave me a few million dollars I don't think I could handle the stress of risky investments.

I'm pretty impressed by how well Musk manages the stress.
>>
I really hope this isn't a video game. I always thought I was good at games.
>>
>wants to have magic in a hot tub with his brother

>>
>>29041622
>retard acts like he's not a retard

Should of just told me from the beginning you retard
>>
>>29026717
Pretty much this.
I think he also said some stupid shit along, like AI could 'escape' into the internet and take over the world among other shit like that. It's like those drunken late night cosmic revelations almost everyone has, but hold onto them until they wake up because they don't have half the world telling them they're a genius.
>>
>>29041670
The funny thing about people like Musk and Steve Jobs and others is that it's not about the money for them. Steve Job's described it best when he said that you have be insanely in love with what you do to be succesful because you wouldn't be able to handle all the crap that happens along the way if you didn't.
>>
>>29038044
Yeah but at what point does your "local maxima" argument fall by the wayside. What amount of increase are you willing to see before you concede global warming is a thing?
>>
>>29041882
Yeah, I think guys like Jobs and Musk get shit on a bit too much by the contrarians here. I get that sometimes the idolatry can get to be too much but I couldn't do what Musk does.

I actually work at SpaceX and absolutely love my job, lead a very simple frugal life and don't really care about money. Nonetheless, I grew up dirk poor and if I struck it rich like Musk there is no way I could risk such a huge portion of my capital on something as risky as Tesla/SpaceX. I just couldn't handle it psychologically. And this is coming from someone who is pretty passionate about space exploration.
>>
>>29042041
>dirk poor
God dammit. Apparently in addition to growing up poor I'm also retarded.
>>
>>29041702
So much edge.
>>
>>29042041
>I actually work at SpaceX

Really? How is it?
>>
>>29029115
>Einstein couldn't really explain in detail how he came up with the idea of why time and space were the same thing, he just kind of knew it based on some abstract idea he had when looking at a clock tower, and went on to prove it. Obviously he needed the intellectual chops to do that, but in no way was his discovery based on rational linear thought.

You do know he ripped off other scientists, right?

The Good News of Jesus Christ is that when we die, we break out of this. This prison that we're all trapped in is a snowglobe of souls gathered by THE DEMIURGE.

This is a short explanation of Gnostic Christianity. The God of the Old Testament is not really the creator of our souls, but a Demigod, THE DEMIURGE", who captured our souls in this prison in space and time and flesh.

The gospel, the Good News is that God himself entered this simulation, he entered it and died, just to let everyone know that if you follow Him, he will guide you out of the prison.

Fail to follow Him, and you will wake up born as new flesh in this snow globe prison of THE DEMIURGE. That is the only way to escape the simulation, don't look away! Read the 4 gospels of the New Testament, and read the gnostic gospels!

>"Split a piece of wood, and I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there." Jesus Christ in the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas
