It was my best friend, from 2004 to 2010.
Then they fucked it up with Cataclysm. Fucked it even more up with Mists of Pandaria, and basically killed it completely with Warlords of Draenor.
I honestly hope Legion fails completely, worse than WoD has. Maybe then it will teach Blizzard to stop fucking around and get the game back into being something decent again.

Their other games have started making them more money, and now with Overwatch, they're going to be making even more. If you want me to get really nit-picker, I'll say the first nail in the coffin was cross-realm battlegrounds, implemented towards the end of vanilla. It killed the social aspect of battlegrounds, in that you faced randoms from other servers all the time, instead of people only from your server.
Now I could nit-pick on that EVEN MORE and say the introduction of battlegrounds early on in Vanilla killed world PvP. (Let a lone flying in TBC)
There's so many changes to discuss, it's hard to really pin point what.

To me, the real bullet was cross-realm LFG system combined with buffing AOE abilities so that any team of 5 retards could clear dungeons by rolling their faces on their keyboards. While you usually would join guilds to find questing mates and run dungeons, people just queued for their Skinner boxes. Levelling guilds became useless, and questing felt like playing a single player game.

To be fair, Cross-Realm LFD didn't come into WOTLK at the start. If I remember correctly cross-realm LFD came in towards the end of WOTLK. Like how LFR came in towards the end of cata.
LFD and LFR (while may have seemed a good idea at the time) have turned out to completely ass-fuck PvE. The recruiting pool for potential raiders has been obliterated by it.

Tbh. MoP was one of the best expansions ever made. Raids/Zones/Quests/Scenery was amazing.
Most people i've seen complaining about MoP are just salty because cata took old zones away and didn't really bother getting back into wow after that.
WoD is also really cool if you can somehow ignore Garrisons.
Zones/Raids/Quests are still better than they have ever been.

I started playing in TBC, and MoP was easily the second-best experience I had in the game besides TBC itself.
Cata and WoD were obvious shitshows, and Wrath was 50% garbage. MoP wins just by being consistently good throughout.
I was a Wrathbaby, and I'll probbaly keep playing this game until it ends, but I always feel like I'm part of the problem.
I was always too socially anxious to seek out other people to group up with, and was an advocate of solo content for a long time. Until Blizzard actually answered my prayers and too late did I realize that it killed the game. LFR might be the only way I can see the raids, but it is by far the worst mistake in the history of this game.

Vanilla had nearly 8 million subs at it's peak, and never lost any subs. In 2006, for $15 month.
Last WoD report was 5.5 million or so, and that was over a year ago and there has been no new content. Blizzard no longer gives out subs, it's probably in the low 4 million now. I'd bet 500k of those are from tokens.
