The first couple Sonic Adventure games were pretty cash. If you have an NGC I'd highly recommend snagging a copy of SA2:B.
Sonic Heroes was definitely an interesting diversion in the 3D realm, having the same feel as some of the more on-rail SA levels with the novel addition of the character-switching dynamic.
Shadow the Hedgehog wasn't a half-bad game, in spite of its forced edginess. It plays more-or-less exactly like the SA games, and the gunplay is an interesting (if not short-lived) addition to the gameplay experience
don't have much experience with the Sonic games (3D or 2D) after that point. From what I can tell, Sonic '06 was a decent throwback to the SA games, taking the open-world dynamic to new extremes in spite of its overt glitchiness.

I used to love Sonic until the games got too many and they noticably got worse.
It happens to all franchises but Sonic went off the deep end and got mega cringe after Sonic X.
The original games have some great jams and fit the time nicely.

For me the games started slipping with Sonic Adventure 2. I didn't really like that the adventure zones were dropped and that my character was constantly changed as I progressed through the game.

I stopped playing the Sonic games after Shadow the Hedgehog.
The first games and the adventure series were alright but it all went downhill from Sonic 06 since the actual series ended and that game was irrelevant since it never happened in the timeline.
The autist on the fandom also did it effect to the franchise.

As you posted, that's the sub-fandom where Sonic fans treat the franchise like DBZ. Mostly-sprite based, the take the whole "Super Sonic" aspect of Sonic to a literal sense and make shonen-tier movies/comics that aren't even consistent with the series.
There's the never-ending old Sonic vs new Sonic debate, which this thread and most of "let's bring up Sonic threads" are infested with in each board. Since the Sonic franchise has always been so fucking versatile, there's never been a true answer.
Then there's the OC community filled introvert children who know little of the fandom. They'll either be apart of the first fandom I list until they grow out of it, become apart of the endless debate for the rest of their life because 'muh nostalgia being the correct', or do of one 3 things that make the fandom widely known as shit.
