Mostly, I read a lot of nonfiction, mostly history, true crime, anthropology, cryptozoology/the paranormal, and biology. But when I do read fiction (that isn't manga or other 2D anime boy based homos) I like horror and mystery novels. I've read through the Sano Ichiro novels and they're a good mixture of political intrigue and whodunnit. I'm also partial to basic bitch stuff like Lovecraft and Dean Koontz. Junji Ito is my favorite author, though.

I don't have a favorite period of history, more like favorite places+periods. Old West, Viking Scandinavia, Bakufu-era Japan, Meiji era Japan, 1800s New Orleans, Post-War USA, Ancient Egypt, Sumerian history, etc.
