1. Just go on subreddits that pertain to your personal interests, hobbies, whatever. Do NOT venture to very popular subreddits. Underground is the key.
2. Do not participate, just observe content.
Following just these two rules, I have no issues using reddit. There can be some wildly amazing content there, you don't need to bother with commenting at all. We've got chans for that

Obscure subreddits might be somewhat good but the site as a whole is still a total shithole because of the horrible voting, post display and karma systems, along with the lack of real anonymity. Imageboards are far superior in just about any way.
Reddit has grown to be so active lately that if you try to search the Internet for information, sooner or later you'll find your answer on that page. I try to visit it the least I can because it's so horribly bad, it's even worse than traditional forums. Obviously I've never posted there unironically because I refrain to participate in "discussions" with overly immature manchildren that don't even know how to act normally.

I don't take part in any serious discussion on Reddit. That's just asking for trouble. Take /r/gamedev for instance, what the heck is supposed to be so wrong with it? Every other day I find a thread worth bookmarking. Either some resource that's really useful or a detailed post-mortem to learn from others' mistakes or something else.
Or the countless categorized porn subreddits. I want a wank to torpedo tits, there's a sub for that and I can sort by the all time top posts. Same with literally every fetish there is.
And from my experience the answers given on reddit usually trumps almost all other sites in terms of accuracy, short only of stackexchange. Googling "how do I X reddit" rarely disappoints.
Rebbit is shit. The clusterfuck of an interface makes no sense and mont replies are either super generic and saying nothing for 250 words or a lame rated PG one liner and a ton of comments unrelated to OP. I use taringa to practice my Spanish and I've heard it called the Hispanic version of rebbit, but at least it's possible to navigate even if Spanish is second language. I'm native tongue English but still can't understand rebbit.

You won't find a better platform for discussion. On 4chan all posts are equally valued. This facilitates unprecedented levels of discussion. Reddit is bad as a community and has a dumb upvote/downvote system that ruins discussion. But I think reddit I'd good for quick general information about interests. Let's say you bought yourself a new 3ds and want to find out how to do certain stuff with it there is a subreddit with plenty of links and useful information if you can filter it out.

What's the point of it then? News updates? Can find that on 4chan just as easily, otherwise, its far too obscure of an interest to even have an active subreddit. Your first rule is still fucking stupid, lurk or no lurk; as it involves certain articles with real content that most people would find interesting but gets downvoted and hidden from a majority of the people, simply because it doesn't agree with the current set of popular opinions.

Reddit is so filtered like people won't say something if they think they'll get downvoted. They have to take their opinion and discard it or change it to sound somewhat neutral. Not to mention people will comb their account history to dox them and other weird shit. With the reddit enhancement suite you also have creeps tagging you for shit adding another layer of censorship on top of the other crap.
I really only mostly used it to browse gonewild but I really don't like the direct nature of being in that close of contact with females which neither of us meet the others standards.
