In my experience, blacks get really pissed off when you don't acknowledge their existence. No other race seems to care about this. I'm in my head. The sensory world impacts me only insomuch as it aggravates me. I really don't care what's going on around me. Can't even travel through the city without half a dozen of them trying to make loud small talk. I've since learned to put in the cursory effort to sate them and make them go away.
It's a cordial acknowledgement of another person's existence while respecting their privacy, usually accompanied by a nod. Nothing wrong with it, especially in a city context. If you get the cue from the person before passing them, like amicable eye contact, you say "how ya doin'" or "hi" or whatever. This is a basic tenet of etiquette in polite American society.
