Anyone here just disappear into the ether? I mean cut contact with everyone and withdraw completely from social media and the like?

I've done this. No one cares. They are much to busy participaating in the game of life to care about some random kid from their collage class. If anything, by deleting your account you're doing them a favor so now they don't have to feel guilty about not talking to you for ages.
