There's a big difference between people who are genuinely autistic or aspergic and people who simply have very stunted emotional growth for any number of reasons throughout childhood. The former, whilst obviously at a disadvantage, can still (depending on how high functioning they are) act and fit in as a well adjusted member of society, whereas (in my experience at least) the latter group are basically fucked barring some sort of miracle.

Family parties are awful. No one makes an attempt to actually connect with me or anything, it's just forced small talk that neither party enjoys. If not making insufferable small talk, I am just sitting. Sitting alone isn't the worst, though, at least I am being left alone. But I'm still in an uncomfortable environment.

A party hasn't been thrown in a while and I've lost a noticeable amount of weight in that time so I'm really dreading the awkward compliments to come during the next holiday gathering.
