Sometimes I come here to bully the robots here because they remind me of my younger self and I know they need all the help they can get. What actually happens though, is extreme butthurt since denial / avoidance is an important part of why people end up being a NEET in the first place. I didn't really have a friend until I was well-into middle school, and, honestly, I think the only reason I ever had any friends was that I was cooped up with the same people for 6 hours a day from age 5 until age 18. There are those in worse positions than myself; I was lucky in that people found me either useful or amusing (by High School, I could effectively make jokes and expect the entire class to laugh, because everyone knew I was smart and not laughing would thus make them look dumb). I was also lucky in that the last time I was ever physically bullied was the eighth grade (I was 14 at the time, 5 years ago; the main reason I wasn't bullied afterwards is because the experience made me hate having to take PE class, so I didn't take it until senior year, at which point people had matured).
It was a whole different game at University. You're not forced to interact with people, and the only way to meet people is of both yours and their own accords outside of class: attending social functions, already having a group of friends, etc. It just plain never happened for me. I didn't even realize how strange it was until I discussed my loneliness with my psychiatrist and they gave me a strange look, but I hadn't had an informal conversation from August until May. I spent most of my time either in class, doing scholarship volunteer hours, or on my computer talking to Russians over Skype (they and I had bonded over political discussions on another site).
I think I was isolated too long from other people, because I have gotten to a point where what others consider routine socializing is terrifying for me, and what is considered ordinary University life is absolutely sickening. When I returned from University, my friends wouldn't stop talking about all the friends they had made, which wasn't too bad, but the degenerate parties, the sex, the drunkenness, etc. It all disgusted me.
