The japanese sword was continuously altered and refined to suit the environment it was used in over a period of hundreds of years. European swords are no different. There's no point arguing which is better because they were used in different places for different reasons and both are now obsolete.

It's a light weight, well-balanced blade that's made to rend flesh with ease, not pierce through plate mail. Classical European weapons were often constructed with different strategic goals in mind, and many are too heavy and cumbersome or too short for instance to be practical today. You'll do just fine with a katana for any close-range combat you're likely to be in today.

Not true, most swords were too thick to pierce cracks in armor and if they could, they wouldn't get past other layers of armor.
The long thin swords were flexible and very thin kind of like a fencing sword. It wasn't just the fact that they could pierce armor that made them good.
The fact that they were so light and thin made it so an unarmoured person could easily run in and stab a fully armored knight since the knight would be too slow to stop him.
