I'd argue it's less about election cycles and more the fact that it has become increasingly obvious over the past decade that the world in which we live is has a dominantly liberal paradigm: The lion's share of journalists are liberals, the political elite is mostly liberal, the media and entertainment industries are mostly liberal, even most corporations (remember IBM's reaction to the Zoe Quinn thing?) push social liberalism.
Imo, this paradigm has existed in the West for the past 50 or so years, it's just that people on the left have been adept at marketing their causes as counter-cultural while also being the dominant culture. Over the past decade, this facade has become increasingly difficult to maintain.
There's also the growth of social media, white people have been exposed to the deeply-conditioned hatred that many non-white people have towards them in a more direct way than ever before, and this has helped move white people over to the right.
The world changed.
More personally, I lost my sister. She's a full blown insane SJW with panic attacks, freakouts, thinks I'm a white supremacist, recently started saying she was raped as a child. She has no job and hasn't for years, and lives off the kindness of strangers that she thinks are her friends but are really using her way more than she uses them. It was never good, and at least it isn't flooded with niche porn and spambots today, but 4chan went from being pretty decent to "just tolerable" on a lot of boards recently since media attention brought a slough of new users to the site, and not good ones at that. /r9k/ bears the brunt of it I think, since this is nearly everyone's second stop after /b/. Jews > Asians > Whites > Latinos > African Americans > Africans > Aborigines
This isn't due to poverty, because rich blacks are typically as intelligent as poor whites.
