Didn't go to prom. I went to the NJROTC's military ball. Where it was pretty much like prom. But it was amongst my fellow losers where I was kinda popular. The ticket was 30$ per couple and no tux required since I already had a uniform. Was mildly entertaining. Didn't have to put up with chads or staceys. Since everyone there was a JROTC nerd. Didn't fuck my date after but I don't think anyone from that crowd did

In the literal sense of the word, prom is not "mandatory" except perhaps at the very odd, very weird outlier school. I could see some weird Christian/Catholic/hippie private school being weird about it and "mandating" simple attendance by policy for some final school dance, for graduation. But generally, you do not have to go if you do not want to, as it has no bearing on your academic performance, nor does the simple distinction of going/not going have any meaningful ethical bearing on whether you can do what is really necessary at the end of high school, which is: graduate, get the diploma proving that you have completed the basic secondary education which is just-short of mandatory for consideration in the labor market in order to subsist, and move the fuck on with your life.
Of course, for many normies and in American culture particularly, prom is a /socially mandatory/ life event.
