Southern CA. I've always lived in a big impersonal modernized city so I probably romanticize small towns too much. I'd probably avoid coal mining areas just because of the health risks, how common are non-coal dependent towns?

One of my two internet friends is Appalachian, we're starting a farm in the mountains on family property. I know that feel OP, it sucks being a Europoor in Canada when I could be in Appalachia. It depends. I was in SW Virginia and pretty much everything there is dependent on the (ever-shrinking) coal industry. Other parts of appalachia (ie the communities shown in Maryland, Ohio) are less so and pretty much resemble anywhere else that is economically distressed.
It is beautiful, but the region has an overwhelming pessimism to it. People don't expect to grow old, or to attain any level of education, or to retire at a reasonable age. It's not uncommon for both parents to be out of work for long periods of time. In most towns, you won't see anyone below the age of 30 because it's generally understood that you need to leave to become something. The people are very warm and hospitable, but it's tempered with a distrust and some resentment towards outsiders/anyone from the coasts. People are aware of their stereotype and to a certain extent, revel in being the "forgotten" part of the country.

Probably just the poverty of the area. I'm from Southern Ohio and the nature of the area is really beautiful, but it's so poor here that the drug epidemic is really bad. There's nothing else to do here so a lot of people just sit and complain about how bad things are.
It's like most other places in the US, desu: it's alright, but it's niche. If you love the outdoors and privacy you might love it here, but if you don't it's not a very fun experience.
