Then I'm interested in a lot of misc stuff that doesn't soak up enough of my time for me to consider it hobbies even in cases I know a lot about it, like movies, TV, fitness. Pretty introverted and don't know more than a couple people, used to visit 4chan way more, so whatever, worst that happens is nothing.

>What do you mean by primitive architecture?
Construction of stone age to about middle-ages personal houses and shelters, as opposed to larger-scale historical architecture which I'm also interested in but more from an art than a construction standpoint.

Also, sandbag houses and other "environmentally friendly" methods of architecture (not that I give a shit about the environment, it'll outlive all of us)

As for favorite western animation, from an art standpoint probably The Thief and the Cobbler. I wish I could recall more to talk about but I haven't really been on an animation kick in a pretty good while. Any recommendations?

Sounds cool, I love CK2 and have EU4 but haven't played much yet from being distracted with the former. I'm mostly into strategy games these days, some RPGs too. What places do you normally play in CK2? I haven't been playing for long but started a bit before Conclave, shattered retreats and stuff sort of suck.
>>28755258
I love Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, saw Mr. Robot and some GoT (prefer the books though, just personal preference). You go fishing much? I have a couple times but haven't done it much or very good at it. Swimming's great exercise.
>>28755266
I grew up surrounded mostly with funny dialects of Scots language and English, some of my family only speaks the former and no one in the Americas (or many in the UK at times...) understands so I have to interpret sometimes. Then I learned Swedish to an intermediate level and from there Norwegian, from these four I understand a fair amount of German and most Danish too. I've started studying some French, German and Russian but I've not done very well keeping to it. Do you speak any second languages, where're you from? I'm moving to West Virginia.
>>28755407
Was low on post characters, so I meant more like TN is near WV. I'd be really interested in hearing about what you know about Appalachian wildlife and plantlore, the area I'm going to is naturally rural and that stuff really interests me but I don't know much about it yet. Have any stuff I should look at or read on it?

For languages, wrote above, and instruments primarily violin and voice, learned some guitar/mandolin stuff and some funny folk instruments.

Alabama here, speak French a passable amount though I'm very rusty. Took it for 5 years in middle and highschool, started as a filler class but I really grew to like it.

I'm jealous you're gonna be in the Appalachians proper, love the mountains when I'm visiting Tennessee, down here the best we get are aggressive hills.

So like residential vernacular architecture? cool. I've been trying to plan a cheap, energy efficient yet aesthetic tiny house for when I finally move out of my parents. I think its too humid here for earthships and such so it'll probably have to be conventional materials but with some sort of passive solar design.

I also want to learn more about making an effective floor-plan for efficient logistics on both a small and large scale but haven't been able to find much material on it.

>Any recommendations?
Not really, I'm still pretty new to western stuff. I watch more from a story standpoint, so my favs so far are BtAS and OtGW. Other than Thief & Cobbler, The Secret of Kells is the most aesthetic animated film I've seen.
>>
>>28756163
What sort of analog electronics stuff do you do, have any favourite philosophers? Do you have much experience with C? I was thinking of trying to pick up some form of programming, still deciding whether to try or not. Looks really useful for certain things.
>>28756172
That's awesome, I wish I was that good with French. Part of why I started learning some, it's so useful and I love a lot of stuff to do with French culture/language. If you speak it passably, I bet you read it very well, speaking/listening is always way harder I find.

Hah, if it makes you feel any better, the Appalachians basically feel like aggressive hills when you're in them because it's so high up to begin with, I guess. They remind me a lot of the Highland's hills in Scotland, which they're connected to underwater, except Britain is very deforested unlike Appalachia. Tennessee and areas look really beautiful too in photos.
>>28756215

Singing sucks at first with that part of it, I'm not past that either. What vocal range would you say you have? I'm contralto and it sometimes feels like everything is below/above my comfortable range.

Your interest in music, psychedelics, walking in nature all sound cool. So you don't use psychedelics but prefer to read about them? The way drugs work is really interesting and I think I can understand that.

I think you sound pretty interesting and are just being self-critical like most of us, but I hope you have a great day too anon.

Historical craftsmanship is incredibly cool and all of that you listed. Woodworking really interests me because I plan on studying luthiery and maybe pursuing it as a career. What's your favourite primitive architectural style? I always found hillforts incredibly cool, croft housing type stuff, ancient shelters are so simple and elegant and look like they aren't nearly as difficult to build. because of this I am extremely cynical towards normies and their priorities, especially women. Also I wouldn't talk to any of the anime or gaming kids ITT

Been meaning to watch OtGW too, looks very Ghibli-esque.

Definitely, reading is the easiest part, writing is easier than speaking, it's conversation and comprehension that really hurt to learn. To be fair though, it's a hundred times harder in English to a non-native speaker.

I have no idea what my range would be. heh. I'm guessing it's a bit higher than average, whatever that is. I have used psychedelics in the past. Currently I don't have the mental state to use them safely. There's a few tabs of LSD (sold to me as LSD, I have not tested them so it's probably 25-B/C/I or something) that have been sitting in my closet for 3 years now.

Yeah that's what I'm interested in studying. I want to develop products that can be used in the treatment of depression, PTSD, and the like. I'll ideally work with people that can lobby for their legalization in medical settings.

Stay friendly anon and keep singing too! It's definitely satisfying when you find a song that you can completely nail. It's worth digging for.

I think you should be okay then. I went to the engineering school's graduation this year and the ECE department had the least amount of students graduating with honors. I also have friends who didn't intern at all and they got (relatively) low paying offers with defense contractors.

I'm a CS major, and I enjoy C programming, but I'm not sure how to hold a conversation about it lol.

Replied to you with the croft house image but I guess you missed it. Do you have any favourite primitive housing styles? I also adore stuff like turf roof housing.

>>28756712
Yeah, though to be fair at least English is pretty rule based for the most part, you can usually make out a sentence based on how it's structured. Plus unlike most languages there's not as many weird things that totally change meanings like gendered stuff to have to remember all of, except unusual cases like boats are feminine. Like in Scandinavian languages and a couple Scots dialects most everything has a gender and there's no rule to it, you just have to remember, English lacks stuff like that. French looks like it has similar things even if it's overall easier.
>>28756723
I think the highest male ranges are tenor and countertenor, so maybe one of those? Tenors are a lot more common than the latter though.

I hear stuff like LSD and shrooms can be used in treatment of depression, I've always had clinical depression and I'm better at coping with it now, but it sucks and nothing seems to make it go away. Best of luck if you can make something like that work, a lot of people could use it.

I find that people with a background in non-romance European languages have an easier time in English, whereas everyone else seems to find the language inpenetrable (including native speakers, but that's a different issue).
I guess that has to do with just how much of the old German style grammar got carried over by the lower class after the introduction of old French to the upper class. Thanks, Chaucer!

Yeah, I think I can see that too actually, it makes sense. Like Germans, the Dutch and Frisians, Scandinavians speaking Germanic languages seem to do well with English, but I more often see romance language speakers like Italians and the French with not as good English. Maybe it's partially for why you said.

It's sort of annoying at times how hybridised English is of different European languages, the etymologies are all from totally different places. Part of me thinks we should make it more Germanic slowly through linguistic purism and make it easier to use and understand and make more sense, but that sounds really impractical and creates a lot of problems/challenges too.

In Scotland I think our use of English is a fair bit more Germanic because of more Germanic influences and less Romance influences. Scots in particular is very Germanic and mainly North Saxon (as opposed to South Saxon English) with influence from Norse. Check out this sort of dialect of it from this old man (little over a minute in), few in Scotland/the UK could understand this but I can hear and repeat it all, I think South Saxon-derived English would've sounded a lot more like this given less Latin/French type Romance influence.

>Edibles:
Sunroot, Arrowroot, Apios americana, Ground-cherry, Maypop, Mayapple, Fox grapes, American Lotus, Blackberries, Mulberries, Elderberries, Paw Paw, Ramps, Persimmon, Osage Orange? and possibly Currants.
>Herbals:
Jewelweed (topical for poison ivy), Dog Fennel, Wild mint, Mimosa bark, and Tulip Poplar bark
>Poisons:
Hellebore, Devil's Snare, Bloodroot, Mayapple, Pokeweed, and Walnut husk (for fish)

I feel like I forgot something while typing but I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Appalachia is known for salamanders so look out for hellbenders, tigers and red efts. But probably not red wolves. They have been successfully reintroduced to NC and unsuccessfully to Smokey Mtn. Park tho. I've heard they brought elk back somewhere too.
Watch out for snakes btw.

I'm mostly a beer guy, Sierra Nevada has a lot of really cool stuff once you move past the Pale Ale generic mark. I like the Ovila stuff a lot, and just the generic Torpedo. This year's Beer Camp variety pack has a couple good brews too. Einstok is pretty good (my local stores just started carrying it) but it's pricey and a bit fag-y probably. Thanks, I'll take a look at that book and youtube channel, really appreciate hearing back from you. I'm going to save all of what you wrote there and look into it all over time actually, that's really impressive. I remember reading about a couple plants, like how beneficial dandelions are and the healing properties of uh, arrowroot I think it was, which was used by Greek soldiers even, it coagulates blood and can be used like a free, wild bandaid. It really interests me but I don't know too much about it all.

Salamanders! I have a terrible photo somewhere of the time I went before (the reason I'm going to WV one of my few friends is starting a farm there and she invited me to join the project with her, I went and visited before). There was this cave and we went through a bit of it and I remember a salamander near the entrance climbing a bit up some rocks. I'll have to look up which it looked most like. Didn't see any snakes, saw lots of deer. That was in only two weeks, here I'll be gone all summer and have more time to maybe see wildlife and stuff.

That survival camping sounds interesting. I would love to do more serious hiking and camping than I've done, just almost no friends makes it hard and it's intimidating to do on my own. You sound interesting.

I'm not that girl, no. I actually haven't looked at 4chan for some time, but I used to browse regularly and figured I'd give it another shot.

My favourite folk instrument I play is maybe pic related, it's tuned like a guitar and a lot like Irish mandolin and bouzouki type stuff, which is how I play it. It has a distinct twangy, drone sound. Popular in Bulgaria, Macedonia and Greece. I play some other stuff like Saxon (Sutton hoo specifically) lyre too, historical music is fun.

>>28757382
>In Scotland I think our use of English is a fair bit more Germanic because of more Germanic influences and less Romance influences
This is correct, Seamus Heaney documents the use of english idioms in the scottish and irish dialects of england that stem from old proto-Germanic runes and language in the intro to his translation of Beowulf - in particular the use of the term "thole" in iirc Irish dialects, which finds its roots in the runeword of similar name and pronunciation which would go on to be the basis for the common english letter 'thorne' from which "the, thy, thine" and etc. were formed, before the distinction between thorne and Y were lost.

Basically, English dialects from regions and peoples less affected by the shift to French by the nobility following the battle of Hastings use words, terms and idioms more etymologically Germanic than the more Romantically developed modern English, even to this day.

Oh no, and Gaelic is in a lot better condition than Scots. In Scotland there's English, Scots, Scottish Gaelic. It reflects the country historically: Gaels from Ireland bringing their language, England and the tribes that formed it bringing theirs, and a sort of mixed English/Norse hybrid language that arose from Germanic settlers which is Scots. English speakers can often understand it in writing and Scottish English speakers a lot of it in speech, like how similar Scandinavian languages are to each other, but it's of a separate origin and very different no matter what anyone says. Check the video I linked for an example. I think fewer speak it fully and fluently than Gaelic because the similarity makes English absorb it much more easily. I do know a little Gaelic though, but me and my family do not speak any at home.
>>28757865
Interesting. That makes sense.

On that sort of note I think a lot of runes and the like may actually be much older than stuff like the Futhark, you see almost the same letters in for example, the Lepontic alphabet, or further back the undeciphered Vinca script which gets called a "proto-writing" because it has no Rosetta stone.

What I've done is mostly classes, so sadly for videos I can't recommend too much. A teacher helps a lot though, they can provide advice and information to help you improve, and if at first you're afraid to be very loud for singing from how you sound, you have no reason to be at a music school in front of a teacher (or so I found not wanting to be so loud at home). It's also made harder because singing quietly is a lot harder than using your full voice and being loud.

What I learned in lessons the past year or so since I started was pitch recognition, which was practising singing to a piano and learning to make the notes instantly on hearing them and recognise them, and is very useful. So, now I can play a scale on guitar and sing it at the same time for example. Then there's a lot you have to learn to do with stuff like breathing, relaxation and using muscles you didn't know about. The hardest part even after learning stuff like this is just practising to make sure to always use good technique so you sound good, and not strain yourself or get lazy.

I recommend finding a teacher or private lessons if you can, if not, don't give up or be too hard on yourself no matter what you think you sound like or what anyone else says, and it's never too late to learn to sing. Everyone had to start somewhere. Part of learning music is being really bad at first, it takes a while to sound great and it can be hard to realise you will eventually when beginning. Good luck, anon!

Well thank you, my pleasure, I grew up with it and it annoys me how little love it gets.

The writing varies greatly because there's no standards in it, dialects vary a bit too. In about the 17th-19th centuries there was some movement to spell more like English even if it's not pronounced anything like that, then everything before that and from today is often quite different. For example Robert Burns is a Scots language poet, but his poetry (for the most part) is easily read by a normal English speaker because of this movement of the time, unlike many poets in it before and after him, but probably little could be understood in speech by someone who doesn't know or understand any as we'd say or read it. The simplest to understand in speech and writing are naturally the southern most, the northern ones tend to be the most different.

That switching between English and Scots happens more than you'd think especially with it dying and former Scots areas becoming more English speaking and some words getting absorbed like slang into English. It's not prestige either so it's common to try to sound different to authorities, non-speakers and foreigners, etc. People try to curse it as being dialect of English which makes no sense, it has different origin and isn't all intelligible even if familiar, but what makes a language is really ambiguous (people used to say stuff like Polish and Serbian weren't languages).

You can find more info on it here, pic related from here is a written example akin to what that man spoke but that no one not learned or studied in it could probably understand in writing or speech.

I suppose it depends on how much you practice and what you put into it, too. But even a few lessons could greatly improve your technique and give you a lot to get started I'd think. I'm sure there's a lot of great information online too, just learning on your own is difficult compared to classes.

Ancient Greece is huge era with a lot to learn, I think the ancient world tends to be my favourite part of history too, the Greco-Roman world is of course the best recorded part of it in Europe. What's it like studying archaeology, how are you liking it? I realise that for all my love for history and archaeological findings, I have no idea what actually goes into the profession itself, it's hard to imagine studying it even though I read archaelogical stuff all the time.

I think most people are just sort of boring normies and find anything like that nerdy or what have you, but I know I sure don't think men into stuff like that are nerdy or gay and nor would most other more traditional girls I've spoken to.

Yeah, yarrow is the term, I remember arrowroot was another term for yarrow though, I think, or so I read, but I couldn't recall it.

Wait you play historical music and trad folk stuff like that too? You want to learn lyre, concertina, bagpipes, hammer dulcimer and pan pipes? Oh fuck. You better have contact information, I have no one to go full autist with this stuff with. I could teach you whatever I know about lyre and I have a mountain dulcimer I haven't found time for, plus some Jorvik panpipes that made me realise wind instruments are not at all my forte, and I'm familiar with and love all those others except Asian instruments I don't know too well.

>that folk dance playlist
Oh my god

Well its not as glamorous as you would think it is. Its a lot of learning about soil and really delicate techniques. Although at the end of the day when you find some little piece of an ancient culture that nobody has touched in 2000 years it makes up for all the boring lessons.

Well it might just be the girls in southern california.

>I write plays that will never be performed
What kind of plays?
I've been toying with the idea of to someday starting an amateur theatre group, but would probably just do adaptations of books, tv and movies since I'm really nitpicky about modern plays but I'm not creative enough to write my own.

Well they are all over the place, lots of different themes and periods. Mostly comedies. Ive written a few about ancient greeks and one that I recently finished was about the second coming of christ...in the form of an angsty teenager. Its a coming of age story about dealing with an insane amount of expectations and having no idea how to actually live up to your parents wishes, although for the main character its more about trying to bring upon a new age of religion than good grades.

I loved acting in highschool and had agents want to represent me but I never went into it professionally. Where are you from?

larktasers at google mail is my throwaway or Riggy on steam (the one with the smug animu gril)

I'll probably be a very poor corespondent for a bit since all my interests are either on hold or slowed to a crawl while I look for a job, so most of my rambling itt is just idle daydreams atm. I'm hopeful about getting a job soon tho, then I should have much more free time to actually do fun things and chat more.

Hey, that's perfectly okay. I think I added you on Steam, had to look through the Riggys a bit.

I'm in the US. That sounds like a fun story that also has a good message.
Tbh my actual experience with theatre is quite limited. I was encouraged to pursue acting by my teachers when we did little skits from greek mythology and christmas plays and also encouraged in my speech classes. But I've never really seen an original play that I've actually liked (out of about six). They all just seemed like mediocre actors reading scripts from boring sitcoms. So I never took it very seriously.
Meanwhile in lit class I read stuff like Brutus and Antony's speeches in Julius Caesar and old oratory addresses and thought "wow, this is powerful stuff." Then I watched films and tv with engaging plots, emotional drama and actors with conviction and think "wow, if only stage actors could do stuff like this. heck the special effects would be easy enough to adapt to the stage."
But I definitely need to spend more time at the theater before passing my final judgement. I imagine Greece would have a very good acting scene what with having such a long history with it.

Video games, politics, music (albeit I legitimately have non normie tastes and everything I listen to is usually guaranteed to have <1 mil views on YouTube)
Also just having conversations is something I enjoy, albeit only with people over the internet. I also like talking about gay stuff, but that's only with other gays, if I'm talking to a straight person I don't bring it up.
Anyone interested in a conversation (tomorrow though since I'm going to bed) my kik is Wololo_wizard

You sir have a brain I would love to pick apart. Yeah stage acting and acting on television are two very different beasts and take a lot out of the actor.

Can someone give me some name related advice, if you have a non-English name that people outside your country have a trouble pronouncing because it has letters that are pronounced differently, would you introduce yourself like that and always explain it to people every single time, or just introduce yourself with the English variant?

Shitposting, anime, vidya but those are starting to wear thin, JoJo is pretty fun though. I've also decided to make youtube videos, because I like making things and seeing people enjoy them, I don't have a mic so it's just scripts.
