I used to have a great interest in physics when I was a kid, my dad would have magazines about breaking-ground physics laying around which I'd love to read.

Personally I'm more inclined to the older 70's 80's shows, how ever I still enjoy modern mecha.
I know this is gonna basic but my favorite franchise is gundam, and while not perfect I think Tomino did a really good work with G-reco.
If we are going with Ovas/short series there are too many too choose, but if I had to choose Dragon's heaven is one of my favorites.
Symphogear is a pretty fun series and I remember watching it just to fill up some time when the first season was airing.
The silliness of it at all started to gain on me, I went from thinking "this is so bad that it's good" to "Listen to my SOOOONG" by the end of the first season.

If you are talking about /m/, don't worry some times gets into "this series is the shitiest in the series" seasons.
Right now every one shitting on Zeta daily, some months ago was IBO.
I think bananagher is a good protagonist and I liked how the series links to past installments.
As for non-anime things, one of my uncles used to gift me popular mechanics issues as a kid and I loved it, I think that really sparked my love for mechanics and math in general.
