Any of you guys ever used a hostel while traveling? is it as scary as it sounds?

I stayed in a shared dorm in Athens. It was fucking awful, I didn't sleep for two straight nights because of people snoring and making noise. Booked myself into a proper hotel the next night and slept like a baby

ideally you're only spending your time there sleeping, maybe cooking, so it really shouldn't matter. I was really skeptical at first but hostels are the way to go unless you're planning a crazy night where you're going to throw up on yourself.
