>someone calls you dude
>can't tell if they're actually calling me dude or if they're using it as an expletive
better than bro at least, right dude?
>every guy calls you "man" when youre out in public
literally why. every male, from my doctor to the liquor store clerk, waiters, cashiers, post office guy, boss at old job, city hall worker, valet, etc. is this normal?
>hey man
>thanks man
>whats up man
>see ya later man
man man man
Would you guys prefer to be called by name all the time?
>>28747040
I don't think I understand this
When people say "man", are they actually literally calling you "man", or are they just saying it reflexively?
It's kind of stupid either way. It's not like whether or not you're a man needs clarification.
>dude
dudedude
i like to be called dude and man, saying my name all the time is too intimate
>>28745961
What the fuck does this even mean? What are you trying to convey?
>>28747309
Either people tag it to the end of their sentences to be hip, or as a non-curse word expletive, or they use it to refer to someone as a kind of pronoun for a name.
I have a hunch that hippies like it because when everyone is just "man" like everyone else, it breaks down barriers and biases between people. Just a thought I came up with now, I can't think of another explanation for why it's a part of that culture.
>>28747449
Or maybe it first originated because one guy forgot another guy's name so he had nothing left to call him except for "man". Or "guy". And it seemed more tactful than saying "hey you", they wanted to cover their blunder up. Or something.
>your autism levels are that high that you get triggered by the most minor thing possible
, dude
>someone calls you "my man"
>>28747584
>tfw you actually like this one
I still haven't figured out why
Seems friendlier than just "man"
"Hey what's up big guy?"
>>28747584
>when someone calls you "my dude"
>>28745961
It's pretty annoying, isn't it chief?
>>28746951
Failed normie here
I hate the word bro
So I try to sub in dude or man when initiating conversation with a guy friend.
Idk why I do it but it just kind of works so I keep doing it
>>28747612
>>28747677
>chief
>big guyfor you
>champ
>buddy
>pal
>someone greets me
I just hate when someone calls me buddy. Anything else is fine.
>>28747726
>"hello"54321
>>28747722
I never understood why that's problematic. If someone calls you chief for example, just answer with "what's up buddy".
>>28745961
>oneitis calls you dude
>>28747722
you forgot the worst of all
>boss

>>28747811
Just call them buddy back. It shuts them the fuck up
>"how's it going buddy?"
>it's pretty good buddy, how's it going with you?
>Walking through wal-mart
>hear a guy in the distance
>Look at this DOOD
>>28747814
Really? I think that's more "buddy" territory. Although I could see someone using it that way now that I think about it.

really... I sometimes call my friends johnny or mack. None of those are their real name it's just fun.
>>28747950
I want to do this now
>"what's up steven?"
>"how is it going arnold?"
>"you doing alright fernando?"
Maybe even mix in a few female names
UKfag here, idk how different it is in america but here "man" and "dude" are very commonplace and widely used pronouns, it's shit like "pal" or "buddy" that will get you odd looks. (Unless you're from a region with an accent that easily fits them into your vernacular)
>>28748014
everyone up in scotland says pal
>>28747985
Aaaa shit that's the best thing to do.
calling Christian Christina
>>28748109
Like I said, "pal" fits much better into a Scottish accent, like "buddy" for scousers. You can't say "pal" in a southern accent without sounding sarcastic as fuck.
>someone calls you young california
>>28747040
i often use it by accident, too. an all female lab group next to me had a separate experiment going. thinking i was setting up the wrong shit, so i asked, "what experiment are you guys running?"
i do this a lot, unfortunately. saying girls or ladies just sounds too creepy in my head. any gender neutral 'what up [blank]' type phrases?
"man" "dude" and "guys" are neutral terms used to refer to any person

You say that, but things like "chief", "buddy" and "pal" are actually pretty well acknowledged to be slightly pejorative in many situations, or at least slightly patronizing.
Worrying about "dude" or "man" is pretty dumb though.
>>28748499
>checked
Those are pet names you'd call a child. I understand that. The word "dude", however, doesn't place the person saying it in a guardian role over the person to whom they're speaking. It's an egalitarian title.
the tumblr autists are out in full force today i see

>The word "dude", however, doesn't place the person saying it in a guardian role over the person to whom they're speaking. It's an egalitarian title.
As I said, yeah. Obviously it can be used in that sense, as any word can, and you just need to be able to grasp social nuances to see it. But "dude" is probably the most commonly used pronoun here in the southern UK, that or "mate"
>>28748439
Chill, bro/dude/man/buddy
>>28745961
>some asshole call you "brother"
Having a real brother I feel like they violate boundaries. We're not brothers you fucking asshole. And it's almost always some junkie talking shit or being annoying.

Aw, brother's a nice one
It's one of the more sincere ones

Has anyone else here ever been called little guy?
I strangely appreciate it more than big guy because it's at least honest
>>28748284
Where I'm from at least, "you guys" is a gender-neutral term for any group of people. Others might say "you all" or "y'all."
>>28747819
Condescending cunt, I call your manager every time
>>28748890
Only moments before a fight starts. I'm not even trying to look tough, but in my language calling someone "little guy" is an open provocation and usually happens after shit already starts. That's mostly because our equivalent of "little girl" is a dominant (but redneck) way of addressing women.
>>28748910
I don't deal with people in my line of work, so no problemo. And I'm using it jokingly, not because I try to condescend someone.
If you take it personally, it's your problem, not mine. Plenty of people are confident enough not to be bothered by it.
>>28749588
It's disgusting, everybody knows what you're doing when you say that shit.
>nigger culture
>"heh, let's alienate this white guy"

>>28749660
I guess I'll stop using it. Not even joking right now, I don't want to make people feel that bad, I don't have bad intentions. Sorry.
>>28749770
this guy is overreacting a bit. Most people don't give much of a fuck.

He probably is, but his point still stands. It's terrible to make people feel bad for no reason at all, so I'll stop doing it.

I speak with a received pronunciation English accent and even I refer to people as dude and man sometimes. It rolls off the tongue somehow.
I love it when foreign fast food servers call me boss
