We don't really choose our thoughts. They just come to us, probably due to the specific state of our brains at a given time.

People act like there's a "you" independent of your thoughts but that doesn't make any neurological sense.

my mind is literally just static 99% of the time and each channel that is my thoughts comes through extremely weak

true but it definitely feels like there's some asshole in my head constantly harassing me about how horrible a person i am (even though i know i'm not one) or that i should kill myself. thoughts like that make me physically ill but i try my best to fight them off.
