A lot of workplaces have some kind of system you have to use regularly. Say you have to fill in some computer form for each patient you have and it's mostly the same every time. Over the course of a career that's a lot of time spent doing a repetitive task. With programming you can automate it. I've heard of many amateur programmers who have gotten a huge raise after showing it to their boss.
Honestly I would first go there to see how the group is before I did anything. You're not gonna wanna come back there if they're assholes, and learning a programming language is no small task. But if they're nice then there are plenty of youtube tutorial series that will teach you a bunch of stuff, so I wouldn't worry about that. If it's popular it's probably good.
