Honestly you should never discredit someone's personality from what they present in public. Their private selves are always going to be a lot different, at least from experience.

Also, you should discredit someone's personality from what they present in public. That is their public figure. The general majority will judge someone from their public appearance because that's the point. You can't say "ah, shes a dick publicly, but once you get to know her shes great". It is all about public appearance. We judge our politicians based on their public appearance. We judge others based on their public appearance generally. There aren't many other ways to judge someone; not everyone is going to get close to someone just to find out what kind of person they are.

Perhaps in the default structure of society, but I don't feel like I abide by it. I don't consider any public appearance as legitimate. I think everyone is fake in public, at which point their private selves is what matters.
In the end, I have a reason to be over the top obnoxious on /r9k/ whereas in other situations I'm nothing of the sort. Knowing that, you can deduce that my authentic personality is something completely different than the general consensus of /r9k/. I hope that's enough for you to be satisfied.

Well, whether it is legitimate or not, that is what they chose to show in public. If you're going to judge someone, judge them how they act publicly. Yes, their private selves matter, but when a quick judgement is to be made to get a quick understanding of the person, publicly is where it is. Also, public appearance is often closely related to private appearance. I wouldn't try to become friends with a drug addicted homeless man that talks about the apocalypse all day every day out in the street because he may have a differing personality when alone and with the other homeless people. His personality publicly and privately are probably almost the same.

If they pretend, then whatever the public opinion of them is, it is valid and understandable for someone to believe that. To believe Ciara is annoying and a whore is a valid idea because of how she has showed herself publicly.
Either way, it doesn't matter if they're pretending. A public display is what people will judge others on and is a valid way of judging others. You can't constantly ask "what if they're just pretending" because then you might as well ask a bunch of other questions to make the person seem better than they truly are. At that point, your judgement seems to be clouded as you try to allow the said person escape routes to seem better than they truly are.
