The 401k is run by my employer will and they will match what I put into the 401k, so if I put in 10% of my paycheck, they will match that amount effectively doubling it. The match means that even with the crap returns I still make a lot more investing in it than anything else and I can always transfer the money into a better 401k later.

Not the same guy but my company does 150% match up to 6% of my paycheck. It's effectively free money and when you do it as a pre-tax you also pay a relatively lower tax burden. The chance the fund it's invested in will increase in value is just an added bonus.
