I'm space obsessed so I love it. Depends on a few things, really. There's a shit ton of lore and back story but it's very shallow without the expansions (there's 1 just now, but more will be added). Kind of an empty game (because space is mostly nothing) but the community, lore and hidden mysteries make up for it.
tl;dr it depends on if you like space and have enough cash for the first expansion

Has there ever been a game as good as Freelancer? Elite Dangerous looked kind of interesting but I'd prefer there to be a good plot, not just a space sim

In the new DLC you can get up to 800m/s with upgrades. Along with being on a high G world and turning off flight assist, flying through canyons at full throttle take a great amount of skill, but is very fun when executed well. Also, disabling flight assist makes your ship both harder to manoeuvre and more manoeuvrability, so being a better pilot can give you an edge in combat.
