uhhh yes Persian is absolutely still a thing. They used to call themselves Parsi but the West pronounced this as Persian. The pronunciation changed to Farsi after the Arab conquests and the group and languge is still called Farsi today. Iran is the country and Persian is the ethnic group. About 50% of Iran is persian and the rest is other groups, but most people are a mix of 2 or more groups

North Iran has a lot more 'whiter' looking Iranians. You'll see lots of blue eyes and lighter hair etc. If you go to the South East and South of the country you'll see far more very dark looking Iranians, like Indians

It's not too dissimilar. The North of Iran got some Russian migrations from long ago and Central Iran got a lot of Caucasus migrations from Armenia and Georgia. The South got some Arab. The purest Iranians are the zoroastrian communities because they generally kept to themselves and didn't marry outside of their communities and you see them different colors too.
I met a Zoroastrian Magi that didn't even speak Persian. He could only speak Avestan, which was the language of 1400 years ago. I had to talk to him through his students that could speak modern Persian and his old language. Modern Persian has remained largely unchanged over the last 1000 years so it's not a young language itself, but Avestan is real fucking old and almost extinct, only really taught now in the Parsi community in India
