I read about this musicology grad student who spent some time living in a remote village in Poland so he could study and record the village music. He gave the local violinists a bunch of cheap booze and that got them to perform on camera. Many of the musicians had actually taken personal oaths of silence out of mourning for family members who died, but he boozed them up enough to agree to give their first performances in many, many years. Kinda messed up if you ask me, but whatever.
Anyways, he brought a TV in from the city so that he could show all the villagers the videos he had recorded for his graduate project. The villagers had never seen themselves on camera before. The musicians were all excited; they probably felt kinda proud of themselves, finally being given their time in the spotlight after a lifetime of being looked down upon for not doing "honest work", like farming or whatever. Everyone in the village was crowded around, really quiet. But once the video started to play, the villagers all started laughing and jeering because the musicians looked ragged, dirty, and impoverished. None of these people had anything more than a small hand mirror, so they didn't really realize what they looked like. The musicians all got angry at the musicologist and felt like he had betrayed them by making them look so rural and lower class.
Maybe sometimes it's actually better to not know what you look like.
