You should give it a go, it was nominated for the National Book Award.
Darnielle's talent as a songwriter bleeds through the book, particularly in segments where the narrator is isolated, or when scene descriptions for the RPG is set. The novel especially works for Darnielle due to the fractured first person narrative format he takes, which I think is his strongest style of writing in music.
