Kicks are one of those things where it requires full commital or there's no point in using it. You'd better go for the knee break or be damn well sure you can kick him in the gut and knock the wind out of him. The latter is the worst if you fail because then your opponent can grab your leg and you're pretty much fucked by that point.
High risk and high reward, but this kid doesn't have the proper technique or power.
If you ever find yourself in a fight you don't want to be in just go for the knee break. Use a stomping motion if he's in a deep stance, or a side kick to the front of the knee if his legs are only slightly bent. As long as you commit and make contact you will get the break and end the fight. It takes a surprisingly small amount of force to break a knee.

It is pretty useful and can be brutal. Basically just a forward-directed stomp, so it doesn't need much training. Any kicks above the waist in a street fight are risky. If your opponent anticipates it or just gets lucky and grabs your foot the fight will be over. Once you've launched one kick he will be ready for any follow ups.
