Good Lord, how I despise this movie. Steve Carell in this picture is to a wizard what Al Jolson was to a black man.
Having said that, I admit the film evoked a visceral reaction in me. I remember watching it in the theater, driving home, staggering to the bathroom and vomiting. Which is odd; I wasn't even drunk at the time. A rare occasion for me, I admit.
I think my problem with the movie, even at my relatively young age when I saw it, was not that the hero had to "settle" for the grandmother who had been through her share of men. Quite frankly, that aspect never even occurred to me. The attention of any woman, regardless of her history, seemed impossible to me. As it still does, these many years later.
Rather, it was the fact that the whole thing was so disingenuous. Did Apatow really believe this is what late male virginity looked like? A wizard's life is a funny thing, to be sure, but not in the way the film portrayed. Late virginity is funny in the way the freak in the sideshow is funny. We laugh at horrible things because they are incomprehensible; laughter or tears become the only possible response to anything ineffable. And when all is said and done, no one likes to cry.
Well, I suppose that matters little. It was a comedy. And in some respect, it gave people a rare opportunity. It gave them a chance to laugh at the old virgin without risking the slightest bit of guilt in the process. His story had a happy ending after all.
It must be nice to believe that no one could ever really be left behind, that everyone has the opportunity to escape. I have no doubt that sort of narrative assuages a significant amount of survivor's guilt.
