I'm no expert in asian swords but I'm pretty sure katanas were designed be be quick to unsheathe and make a cut with. During that time period the Japanese didn't have the type of plate armor Europe had so a thin, quick to draw slicer was practical for the small fights that used to break out. In actual warfare things like spears or pole arms were used.

This sounds about right, it was an emergency weapon in warfare, and they didn't really innovate the design or steel like the Europeans did. If it ain't broke don't fix it was their motto. Good for unarmored opponents at least. Also since they didn't innovate, the warriors had lots of time to perfect katana fighting, but that's pretty much all that's going for itweebs won't have the skill to masterfully use the blade like the soldiers did. It's an OK weapon, did what it had to do, nothing more, nothing less. It shouldn't be super hyped like all the weebs make it out to be though, especially if they mix up the katana with the horseback long one (I forget the name)

Japan's swords are dogshit because Japan is almost entirely void of natural iron ore, the only way to extract ore consistently is through sand ore which lead to them having no metallurgy beyond shitty pig iron fir the entirety of their feudal era.
The folding technique developed for japanese steel wasn't some advanced alchemical bullshit, it was the ONLY way to raise the carbon content enough in any slab of iron to produce steel at all. Said steel was brittle dogshit, hence why katanas need to be so thick-spined and cannot bend well. A katana the width of a European arming sword would shatter at hand pressure.
Luckily for the japanese the lack of any steel industry meant that they never developed plate armor and at most their swords only needed to cut through the paper cloth of fleeing peasants, but even then most japanese swords were symbols of status and rank before they were weapons.

On a technical level, European swords chop or hack. A katana, just cut precisely. I knew a retired gunny that was stationed in Japan druring 'Nam, he studied Mugai Ryu, one of those draw-cut styles. He was telling me the basics of even making a proper cut takes months to get right. Even then, most of the strikes he learned were aimed at incapacitation in one way or another.
